robbery suspect Richmond Hill, police chase Aurora Aurora police chase

AURORA, Ont. – York police arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with a convenience store robbery in Richmond Hill, Ont., which led to a police chase in Aurora, Wednesday.

The suspect, who was covered in mud when arrested, fled the scene on foot after ditching his getaway vehicle after it caught on fire near Yonge and Bloomington.

Yonge Street was closed in both directions from Bloomington to Henderson Drive, but has since re-opened.

Police were initially called to a break-in at a store in Richmond Hill at Yonge and Silverwood. When officers arrived, the suspect fled on his motorcycle, and then led police on a chase along Yonge.

Police said the suspect then collided with a Lexus SUV and then allegedly carjacked the vehicle. The driver managed to escape unharmed.

As the suspect was making his escape, he ran over his motorcycle, which became wedged underneath the stolen car, as he was being pursued north of Yonge at more than 140 kilometres an hour.

The Lexus then caught fire on Yonge, near Bloomington, in Aurora. The suspect then got out of the car and ran off on foot.

Canine officers and the York police’s Air2 helicopter assisted in locating the suspect.

Police located the suspect a short time later near a wooded area off of Yonge Street, north of Bloomington, and arrested him.

He was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

There’s no word yet on charges.
